What Can You Do to Prevent Mesothelioma and Asbestos Cancer

What is mesothelioma anyway. Mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the mesothelium or the sac like protective covering of internal organs of the body. The main cause of this disease or cancer is exposure to asbestos. So, the best possible prevention is to avoid exposure to asbestos. For making itself prominent mesothelioma takes about 30 to 50 years. People who above the age of 65 have shown an increased tendency to develop an asbestos cancer. Men have more tendency to have mesothelioma than women.

Asbestos is a mineral that is very commonly used. Due to increased health risks the use of asbestos has been reduced according to government regulations. In spite of all the regulations asbestos is being used in many manufacturing industries where it is mandatory for production. The most effective prevention method is to limit the exposure.

Working in a company which uses asbestos is not safe. Looking for alternate employment would be the safest option. The companies have asbestos related safety precautions and one can ensure they are being followed. The commonly seen jobs that pose the highest risk of mesothelioma are:

1-Insulation manufacturing and installations.

2-Mining

3-Railroad workers

4-Workers in the factories

5-Asbestos manufacturing companies

6-Ship yard workers

7-Automotive repairs

8-Manufacturers of gas masks

Many old homes contain traces of asbestos. If you suspect your home to contain materials made of asbestos they can be tested in the laboratory. There are agencies dealing with asbestos removal and they can be contacted for removing asbestos from your home. Though it can be done by yourself it is safer to let an asbestos abatement or removal contractor perform the procedure.

Asbestos that is not disturbed is not considered a health hazard. But if there is flaking, friable ceilings and plumbing and if the building is built before the 1980s then there are chances that they contain asbestos and have to be removed safely. Public buildings like schools, office buildings, libraries, theatres etc are all prone to this hazard. The problem should be brought to the city authorities' notice. Living near someone who works near asbestos also exposes you to the mineral.

Asbestos can be transported through clothing, skin and hair. Even a few strands of asbestos can sometimes lead to mesothelioma.

Once you have been exposed to asbestos and have not yet been diagnosed with the fatal condition, there is still hope for you. If care is taken you might not even develop it. Blood tests can be done annually to confirm that you are well. There are other diagnostic tools that can be performed annually on asbestos exposed individuals to reconfirm their health status. These tests also aid in early detection when the condition is curable and can be controlled.

Smoking should be stopped since smokers are more susceptible to the onset of the condition if they have asbestos exposure history. Prevention is the best way out in mesothelioma since it is fatal if not diagnosed early. There is some ways to prevent mesothelioma and asbestos exposure.

What About Lung Cancer

Being one of the most highly discussed and controversial cancer issues is the topic of lung cancer, and the amount of people afflicted with the disease every year, as more deaths from cancers seems to increase steadily as time goes on. Though this topic may seem as though it has been talked about to death, that is no excuse to dismiss lung cancer, and especially if you are a smoker or have a family history of this particular disease or any record of cancers in your background. With this information, maybe you will find yourself a more properly informed person, and will allow you to handle the topic of cancer better.

Lung cancer is the number one cause of death among men and women in the United States, there are two main types of lung cancer, and a smaller percentage are affected with small cell as opposed to non-small cell cancers with both varieties arising from epithelial cells of the lungs. With the symptoms of lung cancer ranging from a cough that wont go away, chest pain and hoarseness, shortness of breath, and recurring infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia.

It is extremely difficult to detect lung cancer early, and if lung cancer is suspected, then getting an X-ray or spiral computed tomography scan done could be used to look for a spot or mass on the lungs. Then if something suspicious is found, a bronchoscopy is can be performed to confirm the diagnosis, and the procedure involves a lighted scope being placed into the lungs. Combined with fiber optic technology, detection methods like these are used to identify early lung cancer as well as pre-cancerous changes in cells, and can be used as a research tool in diagnosis and prevention overall.

A lung tissue biopsy can also be used to detect the occurrence of cancer cells through analysis of the phlegm and lung tissues as well, and this kind of analysis can seem a bit more intrusive than the previous procedure, though it may be best to get both tests done to get a well-rounded perspective on the issue. Lung cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, with most of the contribution to the reason for so many deaths culminating from tobacco use, and smokers have a drastically increased risk of dying from lung cancer.

By staying informed about the means of prevention and treatment, you can be better prepared to face whatever adversity could be potentially life threatening, and prevention is one of the main keys to keeping cancers of this variety from harming you. However, the genetic make-up of your family history can be the reason for any particular degree of cancer you may feel determined to get, but be most aware with lung cancer as it is one of the most difficult cancers to detect and treat effectively.

Improve Your Chances In Fighting Cancer

Though not all types of cancer can kill, it doesnt remove the fact that its one of the deadliest diseases in the world today. In fact, 1 of every 4 persons afflicted with cancer dies. Worse, the illness is not only for the elderly. There are already plenty of children and young adults who are dying from different forms. Fortunately, theres hope, and we may just find the cure weve been looking for in mushrooms. Mushrooms have been a favorite add-on to gourmet meals, even in pastas such as pizzas. These fungi are well-loved for their highly distinct flavor and decoration that they give to our meals. What we may really not know about is that they contain special types of properties that will actually help our bodies fight the occurrence of cancer or increase our risks of having one. The Magic Mushrooms There are three types of magic mushrooms that are now under study by research experts and medical practitioners. These include maitake, shiitake, and reishe. Maitake. The best of all three when it comes to cancer-fighting properties, maitake contains gafilon, a type of polysaccharide or sugar molecule that can activate one of the best components of the immune system called macrophages. As you know, cancers are associated with toxins, which you can get rid of if you have a very strong immune system. Whats more, maitake has the ability to stop the growth of tumors. This is also ideal for those who are suffering from type 2 diabetes. This is because it has another kind of polysaccharide known as X-fraction which aids the patient in reducing the chances of becoming insulin resistant, one of the main symptoms of diabetes. It may not completely eradicate the disease, but it will be a huge help in the fight against it. Shiitake. This is another kind of mushroom known for its capacity to reduce the possibility of developing malignant tumors. It has a polysaccharide called lentinan, which can actually stimulate the cells of the immune system to eliminate as much as 80 to even 100% of tumor cells in the body. Moreover, it doesnt only help cure cancer, but it can also prevent the development of other serious and life-threatening diseases such as hepatitis B and HIV or AIDS. A chemical called LEM prevents the increase of HIV cells from damaging T cells and from reproducing. Reishi. Lastly, we have reishi. These types of mushrooms have been around for so many years. Centuries ago, both the Japanese and the Chinese people have been using this not only to improve their dishes but also to enhance their quality of life. Reishi is one of the medicines used in removing hypertension, arthritis, and different types of liver disorders. Today, based on the different studies conducted on this fungi, it has been found out that reishi is rich with antioxidant properties, which can definitely help in preventing the development of tumors in humans. It also helps one to become immune to allergies, inflammation, and infection caused by viruses or bacteria. It also contains a special protein called Ling Zhi-8, which increases the chances of a transplant patient from accepting the new organ.

About Cancer Research And Prostate Cancer

There are many laboratories and research facilities that are currently and diligently working to find and produce cures for some of the most devastating health issues facing the world today, and every year more and more funds are being channeled into the system of finding cures and creating treatments to lessen the strain and tension related to the affliction of cancer.

There have been many advances throughout the years and decades in the area of cancer research and prostate cancer as more tests are coming to fruition for results.

The great benefit to the world as a whole cannot be underestimated as a majority of deaths total are due to the deleterious effects of cancer in all its forms, and through proper treatments as we know them now, we can now stem the overwhelming tide of new cases reported.

However passionate the motivation is to help prevent and control the number of fatalities affected by cancer, there is need to educate everyone about the signs and methods of treatment for most varieties of cancer that there are like prostate cancer, and raising money and staying aware of ones health can keep the goal advancing ever further. like prostate cancer, asbestos, lung cancer, mesothelioma and much more.

Research in this field has been going on for quite some time, and has yielded numerous beneficial results to the treatment of most types of cancer, there are still a few kinds of malignant growth that are difficult to diagnose and treat.

For the most part, though, much headway has been made in the direction of a cure for cancer, as we keep moving further towards this end goal. Even at this rate, however, there are so many preventable deaths as those associated with some of cases of lung cancer. Eliminating all harmful carcinogens can be an emotionally taxing and arduous task to set for oneself, and can be quite stressful for the person. Prostate cancer research

Only through researching for yourself, can you be the most personally aware of your health, and all those matters associated as such by keeping informed of all the particulars in the prevention and varieties of cancerous growth that may come to afflict a person.

By trusting your intuition and contacting the appropriate medical health official, you can hope to take care of any malignant growths you might currently have, and gain insight into preventing any further cases of cancerous growth.

Breast Thermography Los Angeles

When it comes to living the good life, as many LA residents are striving after, it is one thing to have all the material goods you desire, and another thing entirely to have the health and longevity that you desire. For that reason, among many others, more and more preventative measures are coming to the forefront of health care. Take thermography (Los Angeles residents, listen up), for example. This preventative measure can detect breast cancer earlier than the combined efforts of all other detection techniques. While it cannot operate alone in detection and diagnostics, it can alert doctors to potential abnormalities and growths in the breast in a more timely fashion, which increases the potential to catch cancers before they have a chance to grow. Interested in thermograhy? Los Angeles is home to a great breast thermography center. Los Angeles residents really should consider themselves lucky that they have such a great opportunity to experience thermography. To give a brief overview of the technique, breast thermography uses digital infrared imaging (DII) to capture an imagine of the breast tissue. The heat-sensitive nature of the equipment is designed to show even the slightest temperature variations in the breast. This is important, as in the early stages of a growth (such as a tumor) there will be increased metabolic activity and vascular circulation as the growth clamors for nutrients that will be reflected in the infrared image. The other main screening procedure that you are probably a little more familiar with is mammography. Mammography is a very valuable tool that should be used in conjunction with thermography as well as doctor and self examinations. One of the reasons that so many people are beginning to take an interest in thermography is that it is completely non-invasive. That's right, a breast screening without physical (or mental) discomfort! It can also be done at an earlier age. Younger women have softer breast tissue that, while not suited for mammography, can be screened with thermography as often as is recommended. Why is it so important to be screened for breast cancer? While prevention is key, there are often factors, such as genetics or environmental toxins that contribute to the development of diseases and conditions such as cancer. The trick with cancer is to catch it early, before it has a chance to spread. Breast cancer caught in its earliest stages can sometimes be stopped in its tracks with only radiation and lumpectomy. More developed breast cancer can spread to the lymph nodes and further into the body, being life-threatening and necessitating more intense and harmful treatments such as chemotherapy.

Single cancer cell 'poses danger'

Cancer researchers may have underestimated the power of some cancers to spread and cause new tumours, say US researchers. They found just one skin cancer cell was often enough to generate a whole new tumour. The finding, published in the journal Nature, undermines hopes that only certain types of cancer cell could fuel the spread of the disease. UK experts said more work was needed to pinpoint exactly how cancer cells work.

The cancer studied by the team from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the University of Michigan was melanoma, well known for its ability to spread lethally from a single site. Normally the ability of a single cell to "seed" a new tumour is tested by injecting large quantities into mice with weakened immune systems and counting how many tumours emerge. The relatively small proportion of tumours supported the view of many scientists that not all cancer cells could trigger a new tumour, and that this ability was confined to a smaller number of specialist "cancer stem cells". However, Dr Sean Morrison, who led the latest work, said that this approach was flawed because the mice still had some immunity to these human cancer cells, leading to a significant underestimation of their potency.

Cancer: Choosing a Treatment Program

What are the different kinds of cancer treatment? The three most common types of cancer treatment are surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Treatment is aimed at removing the cancer cells or destroying them in the body with medicines or other agents.

Melanoma: A Kind of Skin Cancer

The body is made up of many types of cells. Normally, cells grow, divide and die. Sometimes, cells mutate (change) and begin to grow and divide more quickly than normal cells. Rather than dying, these abnormal cells clump together to form tumors. If these tumors are cancerous (also called "malignant"), they can invade and kill your body's healthy tissues. From these tumors, cancer cells can metastasize (spread) and form new tumors in other parts of the body. By contrast, noncancerous tumors (also called "benign") do not spread to other parts of the body.
Melanoma is a type of skin cancer. It begins in skin cells called melanocytes (say: “mel-an-oh-sites”). Melanocytes produce the substance that gives your skin its color.
Most other skin cancers don’t spread, but melanoma can spread through the whole body. If it is found early, it can be cured. If it is found late, it may cause death.

Prostate cancer is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the prostate.

The prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system located just below the bladder (the organ that collects and empties urine) and in front of the rectum (the lower part of the intestine). It is about the size of a walnut and surrounds part of the urethra (the tube that empties urine from the bladder). The prostate gland produces fluid that makes up part of the semen.

About Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer in which malignant (cancerous) cells are found in the mesothelium, a protective sac that covers most of the body's internal organs. Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles. What is the mesothelium? The mesothelium is a membrane that covers and protects most of the internal organs of the body. It is composed of two layers of cells: One layer immediately surrounds the organ; the other forms a sac around it. The mesothelium produces a lubricating fluid that is released between these layers, allowing moving organs (such as the beating heart and the expanding and contracting lungs) to glide easily against adjacent structures. The mesothelium has different names, depending on its location in the body. The peritoneum is the mesothelial tissue that covers most of the organs in the abdominal cavity. The pleura is the membrane that surrounds the lungs and lines the wall of the chest cavity. The pericardium covers and protects the heart. The mesothelial tissue surrounding the male internal reproductive organs is called the tunica vaginalis testis. The tunica serosa uteri covers the internal reproductive organs in women. What is mesothelioma? Mesothelioma (cancer of the mesothelium) is a disease in which cells of the mesothelium become abnormal and divide without control or order. They can invade and damage nearby tissues and organs. Cancer cells can also metastasize (spread) from their original site to other parts of the body. Most cases of mesothelioma begin in the pleura or peritoneum. How common is mesothelioma? Although reported incidence rates have increased in the past 20 years, mesothelioma is still a relatively rare cancer. About 2,000 new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed in the United States each year. Mesothelioma occurs more often in men than in women and risk increases with age, but this disease can appear in either men or women at any age. What are the risk factors for mesothelioma? Working with asbestos is the major risk factor for mesothelioma. A history of asbestos exposure at work is reported in about 70 percent to 80 percent of all cases. However, mesothelioma has been reported in some individuals without any known exposure to asbestos.Asbestos is the name of a group of minerals that occur naturally as masses of strong, flexible fibers that can be separated into thin threads and woven. Asbestos has been widely used in many industrial products, including cement, brake linings, roof shingles, flooring products, textiles, and insulation. If tiny asbestos particles float in the air, especially during the manufacturing process, they may be inhaled or swallowed, and can cause serious health problems. In addition to mesothelioma, exposure to asbestos increases the risk of lung cancer, asbestosis (a noncancerous, chronic lung ailment), and other cancers, such as those of the larynx and kidney.Smoking does not appear to increase the risk of mesothelioma. However, the combination of smoking and asbestos exposure significantly increases a person's risk of developing cancer of the air passageways in the lung. Who is at increased risk for developing mesothelioma? Asbestos has been mined and used commercially since the late 1800s. Its use greatly increased during World War II. Since the early 1940s, millions of American workers have been exposed to asbestos dust. Initially, the risks associated with asbestos exposure were not known. However, an increased risk of developing mesothelioma was later found among shipyard workers, people who work in asbestos mines and mills, producers of asbestos products, workers in the heating and construction industries, and other tradespeople. Today, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) sets limits for acceptable levels of asbestos exposure in the workplace. People who work with asbestos wear personal protective equipment to lower their risk of exposure. The risk of asbestos-related disease increases with heavier exposure to asbestos and longer exposure time. However, some individuals with only brief exposures have developed mesothelioma. On the other hand, not all workers who are heavily exposed develop asbestos-related diseases. There is some evidence that family members and others living with asbestos workers have an increased risk of developing mesothelioma, and possibly other asbestos-related diseases. This risk may be the result of exposure to asbestos dust brought home on the clothing and hair of asbestos workers. To reduce the chance of exposing family members to asbestos fibers, asbestos workers are usually required to shower and change their clothing before leaving the workplace. What are the symptoms of mesothelioma? Symptoms of mesothelioma may not appear until 30 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. Shortness of breath and pain in the chest due to an accumulation of fluid in the pleura are often symptoms of pleural mesothelioma. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss and abdominal pain and swelling due to a buildup of fluid in the abdomen. Other symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma may include bowel obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities, anemia, and fever. If the cancer has spread beyond the mesothelium to other parts of the body, symptoms may include pain, trouble swallowing, or swelling of the neck or face. These symptoms may be caused by mesothelioma or by other, less serious conditions. It is important to see a doctor about any of these symptoms. Only a doctor can make a diagnosis. How is mesothelioma diagnosed? Diagnosing mesothelioma is often difficult, because the symptoms are similar to those of a number of other conditions. Diagnosis begins with a review of the patient's medical history, including any history of asbestos exposure. A complete physical examination may be performed, including x-rays of the chest or abdomen and lung function tests. A CT (or CAT) scan or an MRI may also be useful. A CT scan is a series of detailed pictures of areas inside the body created by a computer linked to an x-ray machine. In an MRI, a powerful magnet linked to a computer is used to make detailed pictures of areas inside the body. These pictures are viewed on a monitor and can also be printed.A biopsy is needed to confirm a diagnosis of mesothelioma. In a biopsy, a surgeon or a medical oncologist (a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating cancer) removes a sample of tissue for examination under a microscope by a pathologist. A biopsy may be done in different ways, depending on where the abnormal area is located. If the cancer is in the chest, the doctor may perform a thoracoscopy. In this procedure, the doctor makes a small cut through the chest wall and puts a thin, lighted tube called a thoracoscope into the chest between two ribs. Thoracoscopy allows the doctor to look inside the chest and obtain tissue samples. If the cancer is in the abdomen, the doctor may perform a peritoneoscopy. To obtain tissue for examination, the doctor makes a small opening in the abdomen and inserts a special instrument called a peritoneoscope into the abdominal cavity. If these procedures do not yield enough tissue, more extensive diagnostic surgery may be necessary. If the diagnosis is mesothelioma, the doctor will want to learn the stage (or extent) of the disease. Staging involves more tests in a careful attempt to find out whether the cancer has spread and, if so, to which parts of the body. Knowing the stage of the disease helps the doctor plan treatment.Mesothelioma is described as localized if the cancer is found only on the membrane surface where it originated. It is classified as advanced if it has spread beyond the original membrane surface to other parts of the body, such as the lymph nodes, lungs, chest wall, or abdominal organs. How is mesothelioma treated? Treatment for mesothelioma depends on the location of the cancer, the stage of the disease, and the patient's age and general health. Standard treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. Sometimes, these treatments are combined. Surgery is a common treatment for mesothelioma. The doctor may remove part of the lining of the chest or abdomen and some of the tissue around it. For cancer of the pleura (pleural mesothelioma), a lung may be removed in an operation called a pneumonectomy. Sometimes part of the diaphragm, the muscle below the lungs that helps with breathing, is also removed. Radiation therapy, also called radiotherapy, involves the use of high-energy rays to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. Radiation therapy affects the cancer cells only in the treated area. The radiation may come from a machine (external radiation) or from putting materials that produce radiation through thin plastic tubes into the area where the cancer cells are found (internal radiation therapy). Chemotherapy is the use of anticancer drugs to kill cancer cells throughout the body. Most drugs used to treat mesothelioma are given by injection into a vein (intravenous, or IV). Doctors are also studying the effectiveness of putting chemotherapy directly into the chest or abdomen (intracavitary chemotherapy). To relieve symptoms and control pain, the doctor may use a needle or a thin tube to drain fluid that has built up in the chest or abdomen. The procedure for removing fluid from the chest is called thoracentesis. Removal of fluid from the abdomen is called paracentesis. Drugs may be given through a tube in the chest to prevent more fluid from accumulating. Radiation therapy and surgery may also be helpful in relieving symptoms. Are new treatments for mesothelioma being studied? Yes. Because mesothelioma is very hard to control, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) is sponsoring clinical trials (research studies with people) that are designed to find new treatments and better ways to use current treatments. Before any new treatment can be recommended for general use, doctors conduct clinical trials to find out whether the treatment is safe for patients and effective against the disease. Participation in clinical trials is an important treatment option for many patients with mesothelioma.People interested in taking part in a clinical trial should talk with their doctor. Information about clinical trials is available from the Cancer Information Service (CIS) (see below) at 1–800–4–CANCER. Information specialists at the CIS use PDQ®, NCI's cancer information database, to identify and provide detailed information about specific ongoing clinical trials. Patients also have the option of searching for clinical trials on their own. The clinical trials page on the NCI's Cancer.gov Web site, located at http://www.cancer.gov/clinicaltrials on the Internet, provides general information about clinical trials and links to PDQ.People considering clinical trials may be interested in the NCI booklet Taking Part in Cancer Treatment Research Studies. This booklet describes how research studies are carried out and explains their possible benefits and risks. The booklet is available by calling the CIS, or from the NCI Publications Locator Web site at http://www.cancer.gov/publications on the Internet.

Chemotherapy Treatment for Mesothelioma Patients - Mesithelioma cancer

Mesothelioma treatment options almost always include chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is recommended by mesothelioma doctors to attempt to stunt or destroy the mesothelioma cells.

Most patients who undergo mesothelioma treatments do so in order to prolong life, or to make life as symptom free as possible while there is still time. Most mesothelioma doctors have the unfortunate duty to prepare their patients for the high likelihood of death.

Asbestos lawyers have joined forces with mesothelioma doctors in providing the best care possible, mesothelioma doctors providing care for the patient's health while the asbestos lawyers provide care for the patient's financial future.

Mesothelioma attorneys are working tirelessly on behalf of mesothelioma victims to provide families with whatever closure may be possible in regards to their financial health.

Mesothelioma treatment options often include a visit with a mesothelioma attorney, as a victim of mesothelioma understands all to well the dire effects of leaving their family without enough funds to pay for mesothelioma treatment.

Unfortunately, most mesothelioma treatment options are very expensive and they are long term. Without the assistance of a highly qualified asbestos lawyer, many mesothelioma victims would have no recourse, and no way to pay for the exorbitant costs associated with mesothelioma treatment.

Mesothelioma doctors understand the long fight, and the toll it can take on the body as well as the spirit, Mesothelioma doctors have testified in countless lawsuits on behalf of asbestos lawyers in an attempt to assist patients fight for their rights.

While mesothelioma treatments are slowly inhibiting the victim from being able to enjoy the life they have left, big business is slowly killing the rights of mesothelioma victims all over the country. The government has added to this problem by passing horrendous laws which protect businesses from asbestos lawyers and lawsuits.

Mesothelioma attorneys are there to assist victims of this treacherous cancer with finding monetary assistance to pay for the mesothelioma treatment. Mesothelioma doctors are interested in providing the best quality of life possible for their patients.

Together, they provide the best possible mesothelioma treatment team to allow the victims of mesothelioma to take care of their needs and spend time with their families. Mesothelioma doctors are working on finding cures in conjunction with researchers, although the nature of the disease makes finding a cure in the near future very difficult.

Mesothelioma doctors are wary of promising too much, as most cases of this type of cancer are not detected early enough to remove the cancer. Most mesothelioma treatment options include chemotherapy, physical therapy, and radiation therapy in an effort to destroy the cancer cells and keep patient strength up, with the minority of mesothelioma treatment options including surgical procedures that will allow the patient more comfort, and in some cases, a little more time.

Asbestos lawyers know all too well that it is not uncommon for mesothelioma treatments to take a huge toll on their clients, and there are times when they need to speak on behalf of their clients without their presence. A good mesothelioma attorney will be able to represent their client well in their absence and present a case that will secure a financial future for their family.

Mesithelioma doctors understand the great financial stress that mesothelioma treatments can place on families, even those with insurance. Mesothelioma doctors almost always recommend that their patients meet with an asbestos lawyer to hopefully provide the best outcome possible for the patients and their families.

Mesothelioma treatments whether it is chemotherapy and radiation therapies, or surgical procedures to help patients breathe easier, are a patient's only hope of comfort and the unfortunate long shot at a cure. Mesothelioma doctors are not giving up on finding that cure.

Once mesothelioma treatments have begun, and a mesothelioma doctor and an asbestos lawyer have begun assembling the best treatment and representation options available, then it is time for the patient to dig deep and fight for their own survival.

Family support, medical support, and legal support provide the best overall chances for a positive outcome after being diagnosed with mesothelioma. There is no absolute substitute for overall health, and everyone recognizes the severe unfair nature of mesothelioma, but aside from fighting for a patient's right via a good mesothelioma attorney, victims of mesothelioma always fair better when they deal with emotional backlash and then get down to the business of living as fully as possible and creating the best health for their body as possible.

There is no doubt that the sooner mesothelioma treatments begin, the better the chances become for the victim of Mesithelioma . (taken from many sources)

Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is a disease of uncontrolled cell growth in tissues of the lung. This growth may lead to metastasis, which is invasion of adjacent tissue and infiltration beyond the lungs. The vast majority of primary lung cancers are carcinomas of the lung, derived from epithelial cells. Lung cancer, the most common cause of cancer-related death in men and the second most common in women, is responsible for 1.3 million deaths worldwide annually. The most common symptoms are shortness of breath, coughing (including coughing up blood), and weight loss. The main types of lung cancer are small cell lung carcinoma and non-small cell lung carcinoma. This distinction is important, because the treatment varies; non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) is sometimes treated with surgery, while small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) usually responds better to chemotherapy and radiation. The most common cause of lung cancer is long-term exposure to tobacco smoke. The occurrence of lung cancer in nonsmokers, who account for as many as 15% of cases , is often attributed to a combination of genetic factors, radon gas, asbestos, and air pollution, including secondhand smoke. Lung cancer may be seen on chest x-ray and computed tomography (CT scan). The diagnosis is confirmed with a biopsy. This is usually performed via bronchoscopy or CT-guided biopsy. Treatment and prognosis depend upon the histological type of cancer, the stage (degree of spread), and the patient's performance status. Possible treatments include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. With treatment, the five-year survival rate is 14%.

Mesothelioma Cancer

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that is almost always caused by previous exposure to asbestos. In this disease, malignant cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most of the body's internal organs. Its most common site is the pleura (outer lining of the lungs and internal chest wall), but it may also occur in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity), the heart, the pericardium (a sac that surrounds the heart) or tunica vaginalis. Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles, or they have been exposed to asbestos dust and fiber in other ways. Washing the clothes of a family member who worked with asbestos can also put a person at risk for developing mesothelioma. Unlike lung cancer, there is no association between mesothelioma and smoking. Compensation via asbestos funds or lawsuits is an important issue in mesothelioma (see asbestos and the law). The symptoms of mesothelioma include shortness of breath due to pleural effusion (fluid between the lung and the chest wall) or chest wall pain, and general symptoms such as weight loss. The diagnosis may be suspected with chest X-ray and CT scan, and is confirmed with a biopsy (tissue sample) and microscopic examination. A thoracoscopy (inserting a tube with a camera into the chest) can be used to take biopsies. It allows the introduction of substances such as talc to obliterate the pleural space (called pleurodesis), which prevents more fluid from accumulating and pressing on the lung. Despite treatment with chemotherapy, radiation therapy or sometimes surgery, the disease carries a poor prognosis. Research about screening tests for the early detection of mesothelioma is ongoing.

Asbestos

Asbestos is a mineral with long, thin fibrous crystals. The word asbestos (῾ἀσβεστος) is derived from a Greek adjective meaning inextinguishable. The Greeks termed asbestos the miracle mineral because of its soft and pliant properties, as well as its ability to withstand heat. Asbestos is known to have toxicity. The inhalation of toxic asbestos fibers can cause serious illnesses, including malignant mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis (also called pneumoconiosis). Since the mid 1980s, many uses of asbestos have been banned in several countries. Asbestos became increasingly popular among manufacturers and builders in the late 19th century due to its resistance to heat, electricity and chemical damage, its sound absorption and tensile strength. When asbestos is used for its resistance to fire or heat, the fibers are often mixed with cement or woven into fabric or mats. Asbestos was used in some products for its heat resistance, and in the past was used on electric oven and hotplate wiring for its electrical insulation at elevated temperature, and in buildings for its flame-retardant and insulating properties, tensile strength, flexibility, and resistance to chemicals.

Prognosis Cancer

Cancer has a reputation for being a deadly disease. While this certainly applies to certain particular types, the truths behind the historical connotations of cancer are increasingly being overturned by advances in medical care. Some types of cancer have a prognosis that is substantially better than nonmalignant diseases such as heart failure and stroke. Progressive and disseminated malignant disease has a substantial impact on a cancer patient's quality of life, and many cancer treatments (such as chemotherapy) may have severe side-effects. In the advanced stages of cancer, many patients need extensive care, affecting family members and friends. Palliative care solutions may include permanent or "respite" hospice nursing.

Signs and symptoms of cancers

Roughly, cancer symptoms can be divided into three groups: Local symptoms: unusual lumps or swelling (tumor), hemorrhage (bleeding), pain and/or ulceration. Compression of surrounding tissues may cause symptoms such as jaundice (yellowing the eyes and skin).Symptoms of metastasis (spreading): enlarged lymph nodes, cough and hemoptysis, hepatomegaly (enlarged liver), bone pain, fracture of affected bones and neurological symptoms. Although advanced cancer may cause pain, it is often not the first symptom.Systemic symptoms: weight loss, poor appetite, fatigue and cachexia (wasting), excessive sweating (night sweats), anemia and specific paraneoplastic phenomena, i.e. specific conditions that are due to an active cancer, such as thrombosis or hormonal changes. Every symptom in the above list can be caused by a variety of conditions (a list of which is referred to as the differential diagnosis). Cancer may be a common or uncommon cause of each item.

Infant cancers

The age of peak incidence of cancer in children occurs during the first year of life, in infants. The average annual incidence in the United States, 1975-1995, was 233 per million infants. Several estimates of incidence exist. According to SEER, in the United States: Neuroblastoma comprised 28% of infant cancer cases and was the most common malignancy among these young children (65 per million infants). The leukemias as a group (41 per million infants) represented the next most common type of cancer, comprising 17% of all cases.Central nervous system malignancies comprised 13% of infant cancer, with an average annual incidence rate of nearly 30 per million infants. The average annual incidence rates for malignant germ cell and malignant soft tissue tumors were essentially the same at 15 per million infants. Each comprised about 6% of infant cancer. According to another study: Leukemia (usually ALL) is the most common infant malignancy (30%), followed by the central nervous system cancers and neuroblastoma. The remainder consists of Wilms' tumor, lymphomas, rhabdomyosarcoma (arising from muscle), retinoblastoma, osteosarcoma and Ewing's sarcoma. Teratoma (a germ cell tumor) often is cited as the most common tumor in this age group, but most teratomas are surgically removed while still benign, hence not necessarily cancer. Prior to the widespread routine use of prenatal ultrasound examinations, the incidence of sacrococcygeal teratomas diagnosed at birth was 25 to 29 per million births. Female and male infants have essentially the same overall cancer incidence rates, a notable difference compared to older children. White infants have higher cancer rates than black infants. Leukemias accounted for a substantial proportion of this difference: the average annual rate for white infants (48.7 per million) was 66% higher than for black infants (29.4 per million).[5] Relative survival for infants is very good for neuroblastoma, Wilms' tumor and retinoblastoma, and fairly good (80%) for leukemia, but not for most other types of cancer.

Child cancers

Cancer can also occur in young children and adolescents, but it is rare (about 150 cases per million yearly in the US). Statistics from the SEER program of the US NCI demonstrate that childhood cancers increased 19% between 1975 and 1990, mainly due to an increased incidence in acute leukemia. Since 1990, incidence rates have decreased. Children living near nuclear facilities face an increased risk of cancer.

What Is Cancer?

Cancer (medical term: malignant neoplasm) is a class of diseases in which a group of cells display uncontrolled growth (division beyond the normal limits), invasion (intrusion on and destruction of adjacent tissues), and sometimes metastasis (spread to other locations in the body via lymph or blood). These three malignant properties of cancers differentiate them from benign tumors, which are self-limited, do not invade or metastasize. Most cancers form a tumor but some, like leukemia, do not. The branch of medicine concerned with the study, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer is oncology. Cancer may affect people at all ages, even fetuses, but the risk for most varieties increases with age. Cancer causes about 13% of all deaths. According to the American Cancer Society, 7.6 million people died from cancer in the world during 2007. Cancers can affect all animals. Nearly all cancers are caused by abnormalities in the genetic material of the transformed cells. These abnormalities may be due to the effects of carcinogens, such as tobacco smoke, radiation, chemicals, or infectious agents. Other cancer-promoting genetic abnormalities may be randomly acquired through errors in DNA replication, or are inherited, and thus present in all cells from birth. The heritability of cancers are usually affected by complex interactions between carcinogens and the host's genome. New aspects of the genetics of cancer pathogenesis, such as DNA methylation, and microRNAs are increasingly recognized as important. Genetic abnormalities found in cancer typically affect two general classes of genes. Cancer-promoting oncogenes are typically activated in cancer cells, giving those cells new properties, such as hyperactive growth and division, protection against programmed cell death, loss of respect for normal tissue boundaries, and the ability to become established in diverse tissue environments. Tumor suppressor genes are then inactivated in cancer cells, resulting in the loss of normal functions in those cells, such as accurate DNA replication, control over the cell cycle, orientation and adhesion within tissues, and interaction with protective cells of the immune system. Diagnosis usually requires the histologic examination of a tissue biopsy specimen by a pathologist, although the initial indication of malignancy can be symptoms or radiographic imaging abnormalities. Most cancers can be treated and some cured, depending on the specific type, location, and stage. Once diagnosed, cancer is usually treated with a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. As research develops, treatments are becoming more specific for different varieties of cancer. There has been significant progress in the development of targeted therapy drugs that act specifically on detectable molecular abnormalities in certain tumors, and which minimize damage to normal cells. The prognosis of cancer patients is most influenced by the type of cancer, as well as the stage, or extent of the disease. In addition, histologic grading and the presence of specific molecular markers can also be useful in establishing prognosis, as well as in determining individual treatments.
